  1. Between 1885 and 1908, the Congo was exploited by King Leopold II of Belgium. The population was forced to work collecting rubber (caucho) and ivory (marfil) under threats and extreme punishment. Those who failed this were kill, mutilation and destruction of their villages.

    Millions of people died from violence, hunger, and disease.

    This took place in Central Africa, now the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

    What is most striking is that this tragedy was driven by economic greed and ignored for many years.

    In the Congo Free State from 1895 to 1908.
    The terrifying things he was capable of doing.
